The new Mercedes A-class is set to be launched later this year. It will grow in size and scope, including a new high - tech cabin. The new modern interior represents a significant step forward from the outgoing model and the exterior reveals a bold new look. So far we only have images of the interior including the rather impressive new infotainment system called MBUX which is heavily focused on touch sensitive and voice control operation therefore should help with less driver distraction according to Mercedes.
The exterior includes a more aggressive front end and a new down-turned grille which is flanked by two slim lighting units. The visibility is much better all round, they have done this by having smaller pillars between the windows and put more space inside.
The cabin includes more storage than it had done previously and the boot now has a capacity of 370 litres (an increase of 29 litres) and is 11.5cm longer.
The highlight of the new A-class interior is the twin screen system that sits in front of the driver. Standard models will get two 7 inch screens and top specs will get 10 inch screens. The main screen in the centre is touch screen. Mercedes has disposed of the rotary controller giving way for touch and swipe control. It will also be possible to navigate through the menus using a touch pad located near the transmission stick. It also features a new voice control that can be activated without touching any buttons, this can be worked by saying a key phrase, much like an Amazon Echo device!
The new A-class seems to be edging towards the larger models in the Mercedes range now. It also feels sporty with the new turbine style air vents, with the centre ones having ambient lighting built in. It is given a luxury look by using the same multi- function steering wheel as the S-class. The front seats can also include option including a massage function, making the A-class seem more like a more expensive luxury car. Some models will also include an active blind spot assistant called ‘Exist Assist’ and there is a much improved park assist option with a 360 degree camera.
Mercedes has plans to expand the A-class family and it will include the all new A-class saloon which will launch much later in 2018.
All variants of the A-class will share combinations of gearbox and engines, including 5 petrol variants plus two performance models, A35 and A45, and four diesel options. There is a new EQ power division of Mercedes being planned and a plug in Hybrid version of the A-class will be included in this.
Auto car have said –
The all new A-class feels smoother and more controlled than its predecessor over rough roads. There is greater absorption of road shock and less vertical movement over bumps, particularly at the rear. As well as improvements in comfort, the noise, vibration and harshness levels are also better, and visibility appears superior.
Look out for the new A-class later in 2018.
